OMISSIONS

Recent Programs

January 2-Tong Yang of the United Hmong Association told of the Hmong immigrants to this country, including about 10,000 to the Hickory-Morganton area, and of the tug-of-war between the drive to assimilate and the desire to maintain cultural customs.

January 9-Joann Spees of the Council on Adolescents of Catawba County gave an update on the work of this organization (from which she is retiring this year) and gave credit to Janice Kleva, wife of Ken, for founding it in 1983. She compared some results from 1986 to 2004 which showed the positive results that have occurred in laws and  decreases in tobacco and alcohol use, but also indicated the magnitude of the problem of teenage pregnancies and other ills still to be reduced from their present level.

January 16-Maria Daily, Executive Director of Centro Latino, gave an overview of its operation. It has a staff of 3 full-time people and many other part-time people and volunteers who assist the Hispanic population with English classes, tutoring, immigration advice, pre-natal and other health assistance, adult education, DWI/drug classes, and other services to both adults and children.

January 23-Jeff Cline, BB&T insurance agent and world traveler gave a slide-illustrated talk about his latest trip with old friends to several countries of southern Africa. Spectacular scenery and interesting shots of people and animals made a very enjoyable presentation.

Every meeting of the Hickory Kiwanis Club brings impressive reports of activities completed or planned which do not ordinarily get published in the Clarion because they are so numerous and considered normal.

The Terrific Kids program with several volunteers most weeks is enthusiastically received by schools, parents and children and encourages children in their progress through the school systems.

The Key Club at Hickory High School is very active and Danny Seaver has a full report almost every Tuesday of activities completed or planned for the future.  The latest plans are the preparation for their annual convention where they expect to win many awards and honors as they have in the past.

Likewise, the Circle K clubs at CVCC and Lenoir-Rhyne College and their activities at The Catawba Science Center and at other projects are reported often by Linda Baker and Harrison Jahn.
