Recent Programs

January 8– Tom Jacobik, Manager of Google operations in the Carolinas, spoke about the new Google operations in Lenoir.  They are placing a great deal of emphasis on education and have collaborated with the community college in Caldwell County to improve the  IT (information technology) program, which recently graduated a class of 65, of which 6 were hired by Google.  Do No Evil is the motto of Google and they are trying to apply that in Lenoir with a stress on local hiring.  Already 350 workers at an average salary of $38,000 are employed, mostly in construction at this point.  $600 million is being invested and the data servers will soon be tested with the first building expected to be fully operational by the end of the year.

January 15– Donna Mull, Catawba County Extension Agent, presented information about the 4-H club activities. She was accompanied by two teenagers, Mattie Moulton and Ethan Hefner, who had projects raising Angus cattle and horses.

Announcements

The mid-year conference is to be held in Myrtle Beach on February 1-3.

Dick Washer was prominently mentioned in a newspaper item about the Catawba Valley Camera Club. He took first place for one photo and tied for second place for another in the Accomplished division of the annual competition for prints of photographs taken at club-sponsored field trips during the year.

The golf committee reminds everyone that the tournament will soon be here and sponsors and teams are needed for this very important event.
