Club Completes Peanut Sales Project Under the leadership of Chairman Ken Kleva, assisted by Wendell Cramer, the club has essentially completed this year’s annual fund-raising project. Ken recently reported net profits totaled $2,140, exceeding our budgeted target. Thirty-five members and three former members contributed to these numbers. Dr. Tom Warren continued his dominate sales leadership role, accounting for 13 1/2 cases. Matt Barkley is credited with four cases and the following individuals or couples sold two cases each: Rick/Teresa Foster, Dr. Harrison Jahn, Corki Jones, Dave Kozak/Deanna Pennell, Danny Seaver and Jim Tillman. Congratulations to all who led or participated in this sales effort. However, we have additional profit opportunities from the sales of select pecan-halves, which were available late in the campaign, thanks largely to Wendell Cramer. These are priced at $6.50 per 12 oz. bag and we need to move this stock as promptly as possible. Won’t you help? Byerly/Cramer At District Convention Dr. Grimes Byerly and Wendell Cramer reported a “good” Mid-Winter Convention this past weekend at Myrtle Beach. Highlights included two emerging District-wide projects–providing paper-backed dictionaries to all third grade students throughout the Carolinas and a campaign to use outdoor billboards to advertise Kiwanis and its missions. |

Recent Programs January 17–Headmaster Colin Stevens of Patterson School in Happy Valley (north of Lenoir) spoke to the club about his life-long passion for teaching and his background as an educational consultant. In his current position he has an opportunity to implement his concepts at the unique and highly rated Patterson Boarding School. Located on a beautiful 1400-acre estate, Patterson School was established in 1909 under the sponsorship of the Episcopal Church. Today, it no longer has ties to the church, but continues its strong Christian heritage in educating its 80 to 90 co-ed students, 30 percent of whom are from foreign countries. Headmaster Stevens, a native of London, England, was accompanied by his Dean of Development Randy Gibson. He was introduced by his Board Member Danny Seaver. January 17–Assistant Catawba Riverkeeper C. David Merryman spoke to the club about his advocacy organization–the Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation, Inc. He cited unparalleled population growth in the Catawba River Basin and the continuing demand for water as significant threats to the river’s ability to support life. He believes, through the growth of his non-profit organization, more people will be concerned with this threat and serve as environmental “neighborhood watches” to increase public awareness and accountability. The program was arranged and introduced by Dr. Tom Warren. January 31–Executive Director Mark Sinclair of the local Science Center appeared before the club to receive a contribution to help support this summer’s Critical Thinking Institute. Involving teenage kids, the continuing program is designed to stimulate their thinking in solving real business and industrial problems, using team concepts to achieve their competitive goals. Sinclair is extremely excited about the pending proposals to renovate an adjacent 13,000 sq. ft. building, which would include, among other things, a planetarium theater. He promised to return shortly to give the club a detailed report on this Science Center expansion. President Helen presented the club’s $1500 check. February 7–Dr. Chris Toler, principal of the relatively new Valley Corners Chiropractic, highlighted the theories of chiropractic healing and made a number of suggestions for improved personal health. Dr. Toler, introduced by Rick Foster, suggested our bodies’ in-born mechanisms often promote self-healing and these, in conjunction with appropriate chiropractic procedures, are significant factors in relieving pain. Dr. Toler also suggested that good health is dependent on good physical, emotional and spiritual health as well as appropriate nutrition, excise and sleeping habits. Dr. Toler’s office is located in Valley Corners Shopping Center and he may be reached at 267-0002.

Carroll, a 50-year practicing attorney, was a former member of this club and a charter Life member of the WCC club. He continued to serve both clubs as a pro-active trustee for the Kiwanis Foundation, an organization his family has suggested for his memorial gifts. If you are so inclined, gifts may be sent to Landon Lane, Jr. |
