Recent Programs February 27– Terry Clark, Greater Hickory Airport manager and Airport Task Force chairman, discussed the past, present and future of the airport. Opened in 1940 and using 16 miles of fencing around 1100 acres, the airport had three airlines using it in 1980. With the latest withdrawal of service the Hickory area is again without scheduled flights. The importance to the city of Hickory of the business aircraft that are based here was illustrated by the example of the loss of a taxable asset of $18,000,000 when a corporation decided to move their large business jet to another location. Besides the continuing effort to regain scheduled service there are efforts to make the airport more attractive to corporations and aircraft owners and by the possible conversion of land along the shorter runway to hangar space. March 6– Jim Correll, Executive Tournament Director of the Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn, (and also Marvin Zerdan’s son-in-law) talked about the tournament and its impact on the local area. About $20,000,000 was generated for Catawba County alone last fall by the tournament. Exposure on national TV also gets our area known to many viewers. More than $400,000 has been donated to local charities in the four years that the tournament has been held. Included in that sum is $500 presented by Jim to our club (as in the other years) for the club’s service as marshals. An additional $30,000 was awarded to the Corner Table food kitchen by the PGA Tour (not the Greater Hickory Classic). March 13– Mark Gosnell, Mary Ann Gosnell and Charles King were present to talk about Brett’s Ride, a benefit bicycle ride to raise money to fund research on rare forms of cancer at the Wake Forest Baptist Children’s Hospital. Brett Gosnell was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, a childhood cancer of the muscle, in 2003. He had been an outstanding football player and student and during his disease went from #2 to #1 student at HHS. He was able to graduate from Hickory High School and enter the University of Virginia, but succumbed to the disease last year. A video was shown of Brett reading a challenge to his friends shortly before he died. This year’s ride will be held Oct.7. Last year $86,000 was raised and in the four years of the ride, more than $150,000 has been contributed. At this meeting
it was also announced that at the Circle K convention in Burlington,
Dale Hamilton of the
CVCC Circle K club was given an
award for the best website, Linda Baker
was named the Outstanding Faculty
Advisor, and the club won awards for individual contributions
and outstanding community relations. |
