May 13 Tournament Date Near

The Club’s all-important 2005 Golf Tournament is only five weeks away when you receive this issue, but there is ample time to do your part to ensure its success.

Tournament Co-chairman George Hemphill announced he has sent over 200 letters to past years’ participants urging them to again join our group for fun, prizes and the opportunity to share proceeds with worthy causes assisting the area’s children.

Membership Drive

Membership and Retention Committee Co-Chairmen Wendell Cramer and Rick Foster have announced a new membership drive to strengthen our club and ensure its future. To increase interest and motivation, each member has been assigned to a two-member team. Check the easel placard at the next Tuesday’s meeting if you don’t know your partner, and contact him or her to exchange ideas and plan your strategy for securing new members.

Also, make a serious effort to invite and secure a commitment from your team’s potential members to attend our special membership night on April 19. This highlight program will feature a performance by the famed CVCC Showcase Choir. Don’t miss this event!

Time for Highway Clean Sweep

Dr. Harrison Jahn, Co-chairman of the Community Services Committee, has announced that Saturday, April 23 is the date for the quarterly cleanup of our Adopted Highway–3rd Avenue NW from the Arts and Science Center to its junction with US Highway 321 at Arbys. Volunteers will meet at 9:00 am in the Arts and Science parking lot.

Kleva and Lee Note 20th Kiwanis Membership Anniversaries

With generous contributions to “Happy Bucks”, long-term active members Ken Kleva and Al Lee celebrated their 20th anniversary of Kiwanis membership.

Both were inducted simultaneously by then President Bruce Blackburn. Ken was sponsored by former members Roy Dill, now residing at Kingston, and David Kenney, now retired in Greensboro. Al was sponsored by his friend Dr. David Chou, now retired and living in High Point.

Both men have served as outstanding Kiwanis leaders and both are past Presidents. Want you make a point to congratulate and thank each of them for their significant roles they have played in promoting the principle of Kiwanis through the Hickory club.

Recent Programs

March 15–Donna Davis Ballenger spoke to the club about her 16-year term in Washington as spouse of Congressman Cass Ballenger. Her comments ranged from small and costly 1860’s townhouses, exciting ceremonial events and parties to the routine weekend commutes to Hickory. Her foreign travel included some grueling trips to Latin American countries, where, among others, she and Cass continued their long-term mission of providing surplus supplies to Guatemalan hospitals.

The speaker related her experiences during and following the 9/11 attack and how Washington has dramatically changed for the worse as a place to live as security has necessarily increased. Further details can be gleaned from her recently published book Diary of a House Spouse.

March 22– James L. Correll, Executive Director of the Greater Hickory Classic Golf Tournament at Rock Barn, touted the merits of this year’s tournament in terms of weather and more favorable dates–October 3 through 9. He also expects the tournament to be the biggest single event for this area involving name players, increasing numbers of fans and a billion-dollar area-wide economic impact, including at least $100,000 in charitable gifts.

Correll presented contributions to the club including four rounds of golf at Rock Barn and four weekly passes to the Greater Hickory Tournament–to be used as prizes for our Club’s upcoming tournament–and a community charitable gift in recognition of our club’s volunteer services. We can show our appreciation by volunteering to be one of the 2000 needed volunteers for this year’s tournament.

The speaker was accompanied by his wife Liz and parents-in-law member-Marvin and Elaine Zerden. He was introduced by Frank Willis.

March 29–District Executive Director JohnNorwood of the Lakeland District, Piedmont Council of the Boy Scouts of America, highlighted the growth of the Scout movement in this area and its impact on community life.

As an example, Norwood focused on the Scout-sponsored Learning for Life Program that has been implemented in a number of area schools as part of the curriculum for Second and Third Graders. The program, with detailed lesson plans and website help, teaches the targeted students character building, which parallels a number of Scouting principles.

Other major District assets cited by the executive in getting boys involved in Scouting include the District camp site in Rutherfordton County, a facility featuring two lakes and accommodations for the District’s 19,000 Scouts and 800 adult Scouters in training. Norwood named three of the District’s most experienced and effective Scouters as being members of our club–Bill Barkley, Dr. Tom Warren and Frank Willis–all having earned the coveted Silver Beaver Award.

April 5–Our resourceful Vice President and Program Chairperson Helen Devlin improvised the evening’s program by relating how our club’s contributions to Long View Elementary School were used to enhance the children’s educational experiences. She also quoted from a book loaned by George Hemphill entitled “Why I Live in North Carolina”. It is a collection of “down home” expressions and events typical of NC life. To her credit, Helen, a transformed Pennsylvanian, understood most of the lines without explanations.

Thank you, Helen, for this program and for all the others you arrange and frequently introduce.
