Recent Programs April 10– Michael Anthony, director of the Sweethearts Program at Sweetwater school, told of the amazing progress made by students when adult volunteers showed an interest in them with the 1/2 hour one-on-one tutoring sessions. The students are of predominantly African-American and Hispanic backgrounds. April 17– Susan Hanley of the Catawba County Parenting Network discussed the work that is done by that organization. Catawba County ranks 17th among the 100 North Carolina counties in incidents of child abuse and neglect. The Parenting Network is the only consistent provider of parenting education programs and parent support groups in the county. The Network is moving into a larger facility where they will be able to expand the number of classes and other programs to reach at-risk parents of small children. |

The April 24 meeting will be held at Bennett’s Smokehouse and Saloon, corner of Fairgrove Church Road and US 70 at 5:30 pm. Bennett’s as a Major Sponsor is also providing the lunch at the May 21 golf tournament. The Club’s May 21 golf tournament will soon be here so it is important that teams and sponsors be obtained as quickly as possible and that all members who are able to volunteer for that day (it’s a Monday) do so. Volunteers for the Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn in September can save $10 by sending in the volunteer application before May 1. The fee is $50 before then and $60 afterwards. The fee provides for the uniform package consisting of a golf shirt, full-zip wind jacket, volunteer hat or visor, pair of PowerSox, badge for parking all week, breakfast/lunch for working shifts, invitation for two to a Volunteer Party, tickets to a Craw-dads game August 14, a Weekly Grounds Badge for a guest, and a voucher for a round of golf if three shifts are worked. The clean-up of 3rd Avenue will take place at 9:00 AM on Saturday, April 21. Participants will meet in front of the Science Center. The Lenoir-Rhyne Circle K club is going to clean parks in the City of Hickory. At the April 10 meeting, Distinguished Service pins were presented to Past-President Helen Devlin and Past-Secretary Margaret Sorrell. Also at the April 10 meeting, a framed stained-glass piece of art with the Kiwanis motif was presented to the club.. It was made by D.J. Lassiter, a former recipient of a Kiwanis scholarship, who is now in a Nuclear Medicine program. The Newton Kiwanis club is serving a pancake breakfast on Saturday, May 12 and support for it would be appreciated. At the March20 meeting
a check was presented to 5th grader
Adrian Batty to provide charter bus transportation for
56 Long View students
to go to the NC Zoo. These funds
were derived from the club’s Christmas contributions for Long View
