Recent Programs April 12–Our own Rev. Stanley Stiver presented a fascinating program on crosses of Africa.. The speaker described and showed a number of crosses from his extensive collection, pointing out their unique backgrounds and artistic features. Over the centuries Ethiopian Christians have worn coptic crosses as a symbol of their faith, and Egyptians have worn ankh crosses as a symbol of life, some having been discovered in King Tut’s tomb. Thank you, Stanley, for sharing a portion of your collection, which in total includes approximately 1,000 crosses. April 19–Living up to its advance billing, CVCC’s Showcase Choir under the direction of Mike Kirby, Music Instructor, thrilled the members and invited guests with their talent and lively numbers. Interspersed with professional-like soloists and chorography, the selections included Big City Sweep, Something Latin, Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee, Ragtime, Love Potion No. 9, When Will I Be Loved and medleys from Chicago. Mr. Kirby explained that this year’s 16-member chorus is structured with virtually all newcomers. All members are on full 2-year scholarships, and will have participated in 25 concerts, including four in Italian cities, by the end of this season. Most students continue their musical education at advanced institutions and pursue careers as performers or teachers. April 26–Regular meeting at FBC was adjourned following the meal and announcements to reconvene at the Arts and Science Center for a special viewing of the acclaimed Tropical Rainforest Exhibit. Executive Director Mark Sinclaire was our host, and those attending reported a great experience, including the viewing and touching of a number of small exotic animals. Thank you, Mark! May 3–Past club president (1963) and retired hosiery manufacturing executive C. W. (Pete) Broome presented the program on his life’s fascination with Circuses and their Surrounding Lore. Broome became “hooked” on circuses from his early childhood experiences here in Hickory and followed them throughout his life, including trips to Europe and Russia to experience performances in those countries. The program was initiated by Marvin Zerden, but in his absence the speaker was introduced by Howard Zerden, Marvin’s brother. Four Members Tour Italy with Choir, Pay Tribute to Pope John Paul II Wendell Cramer, Margaret and Vic Sorrell and Brad Saine, all members of St. Aloysius Catholic Church Choir, traveled to Italy with their choir to compete with 13 similar choirs, placing third. Their return itinerary included a visit to Rome, which coincided with the Pope’s passing. This allowed them to join thousands of others in paying personal tribute to John Paul II (with waiting times of eight hours). Five Kiwanians with Great Help Complete Highway Cleanup Dedicated Kiwanians Les Bird, Helen Devlin, Tom Shields and Margaret Sorrell, under the leadership of Dr. Harrison Jahn, and with significant help from 3 HHS Key Clubbers, 6 LRC and 1 CVCC Circle K Clubbers successfully completed this spring’s environmental cleanup of 3rd Avenue NW. |
