Recent Programs

April 24– The meeting was held at Bennett’s Smokehouse and Saloon with an excellent dinner.  Bennett’s will also be supplying lunch at the golf tournament.

May 1Fred Robinson, movie actor and producer, spoke about his career and present work.  A 1999 graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne College, he has appeared on stage and in movies including the soon-to-be-released “The Last Confederate” which also stars Mickey Rooney and Lee Majors.

May 8Cindy Boger, of Parents Are Teachers, talked about her organization’s work in helping parents assist their children in their education. With a staff of 8 teachers, funded by Head Start and other sources, Parents Are Teachers helps parents who may otherwise not understand the educational process too well.

May 15Mitzi Gelman, director of the Habitat For Humanity in Hickory, told of the history and present activities of Habitat.  Begun in 1985, the local branch has built 108 homes and is in the process of building several more in Highland Village (there will be 12 total when all are built).

Houses now take about $75,000 in materials to construct, but the quality of the houses has been upgraded in recent years.

The zero-energy house (with solar-cell electrical generation)  is now being lived in and the owner actually receives a small check each month from Duke Power to pay for the amount of electrical energy delivered to Duke that exceeds the amount used in the house.

One house is being built near Hickory High School to involve both HHS students and other youth groups in Habitat.

Another house will be built as a memorial to Tom Mate, long-time Habitat For Humanity Store manager, who died last year.

Kiwanis Scholars Named

At the May 15 meeting, Ken Kleva, Kiwanis Foundation Trustee, presented certificates to the three new winners of  Kiwanis Foundation Scholarships. Each winner will receive $3000 per year for four years. They were chosen from a final group of  ten candidates in a process that was described as very difficult for the judges.

 The recipients are:

1-Candace Fox (sister of a current scholarship holder) from St. Stephen High School who will be attending UNC-Greensboro

2-Sarah Pollard,  also from St. Stephen High School who will go to Meredith College majoring in social work

3-Ka Ying Yang, a Key Club member from Hickory High School who is bound for Wingate in a pre-pharmacy program.

All ten finalists for the scholarships had been Terrific Kids in earlier years.

Also present were three current holders of Kiwanis scholarships: Jennifer Fox, Amanda Kiziah and My An Lee, who reported briefly on their progress (all excellent) and future plans. Jennifer is at UNC-Charlotte, Amanda at Lenoir-Rhyne and My An at UNC-Chapel Hill.

The Kiwanis Foundation is jointly funded by the Kiwanis Club of Hickory and the Kiwanis Club of Western Catawba County.
