Club Mourns Loss of Life Member George F. Hemphill All Kiwanians were saddened to learn of George’s unexpected passing on May 20. He was truly an outstanding Kiwanian and community leader, having actively served this club for 41 years. Typical of his on-going leadership roles, he served as Lead Co-Chairman of this year’s just concluded, highly successful, golf tournament. Its outcome is a fitting tribute to his outstanding motivational and leadership skills. George will be greatly missed by all local and district Kiwanians. Our heart-felt condolences go out to Virginia and all members of their family. |

Recent Programs May 10–Pat Bain, Vice Principal of Long View Elementary School, shared with us the challenges of teaching their precious children, primarily minorities (Long View no longer has a qualifying “white” tracking subgroup). Mrs. Bain was accompanied by three of her dedicated teachers–Jennifer Lu Wadsworth, Meredith Mozgalo and Pat Mozgalo, all of whom go beyond the call of duty in helping meet their children’s basic physical needs. Mrs. Bain, introduced by Helen Devlin, thanked the club for its special donation, which was used to purchase 30 books and 15 tapes for their first grade classes. May 17–Rev. Reggie Longcrier, Executive Director of Exodus Homes and founding pastor of Exodus Missionary Outreach Church, updated the club by video and commentary on the status of his vital ministries. He stated his faith-based ministries are growing rapidly–he now has the capacity to accommodate in six locations up to 75 of God’s most neglected people–those who are addicted, homeless, sick, in prison or recently released. Helen Devlin arranged and introduced the program, and Marvin Zerden shared a memorable experience he had had several years ago with Rev. Longcrier when he first came to Hickory as “one of God’s most neglected”. May 24–The program was dedicated to the graduating seniors from this year’s award-winning HHS Key Club. In attendance were five of the 15 most active senior members, accompanied by some of their parents. Helen Devlin was in charge of the presentations. Before presenting their certificates of honor, she called on each senior–Manuel Cuidad, Elyse Hamilton, Lindsay Kenz, Andy Terrell and Tou Xiong–to give their names, their planned college or university and their major. Colleges ranged from LRC, to High Point University, to Davidson and the College of London. Majors included political science, economics, English, biology, computer programming and pre-med, all indicative of the caliber of students driving the current key club. Two of the seniors–Hamilton and Xiong are major scholarship recipients. Danny Seaver, faculty adviser, characterized the HHS Key Club as one of the world’s three top-ranked Clubs in terms of achievement. May 31–Helen Devlin and Teresa Foster gave an interesting and entertaining program on the Red Hatters Society, which is dedicated to “women over fifty having fun”. Organized nationally since 2001, there are now 18 chapters in the Greater Hickory area. |

Club Elects 2005/2006 Officers and Directors At its annual meeting on May 17, the club–in an historic move–elevated President-Elect Helen Devlin to the Office of President effective October 1, 2005, making her the club’s first female president. President Helen joined the club in 1997, and through dedication and enthusiastic involvement in Kiwanis activities, she has risen through the ranks to its highest local office. Helen is an At-Risk Councilor at HHS. In another move the club tapped a relatively new transfer member David Kozak for President-Elect. David has distinguished himself by quickly entering into the club’s activities and recruiting a talented new member. He is a V/P for Business Banking at RCB Centura. The Club also re-elected veteran Treasurer Rick Hammer, Audit Manager with Lowdermilk, Church & Co., and the new board of directors appointed Margaret Sorrill, a CVCC Math Instructor, to succeed veteran secretary Al Lee, who asked to be relieved. New two-year directors elected to the Board include: Linda Baker, Teresa Foster, Brad Saine, Dr. Bill Shuford and Rev. Stanley Stiver. Returning directors include: Wendell Cramer, J. C. Epting, Ken Kleva, Dr. Tom Warren and Frank Willis. Congratulations to all of our new officers and directors. We thank you for your willingness to serve and look forward to another great year in Kiwanis under your leadership. |
