T. Devlin & F. Willis Reflect on Golf Tournament Successes

Tom Devlin and Frank Willis, Co-chairmen of the 2006 Kiwanis-sponsored Golf Tournament, announced to the club on May 30 that the financial proceeds will exceed $16,000, pending completion of outstanding collections. This is considered adequately successful and fulfills the club's primary mission of funding its budgeted child-related projects and our college scholarship obligations. Congratulations to the Co-chairmen, other committeemen and the club as a whole for this outstanding effort.

Reflecting on elements of the tournament that contributed most to this year's success, Devlin and Willis cited our major sponsors' list including Bennett's Barbeque and their catered meal (thanks to Al Lee's contribution in lining up this sponsor); the largest number of hold and event sponsors (thanks to Richard Thompson's leadership); the new venue at LHCC's Catawba Springs Course with its quality course and cooperative staff; the quantity and quality of the prizes offered (thanks especially to Wendell Cramer and Frank Willis)-see Page 2; and the smooth-running registration and support staff (thanks especially to Frank Ryan (registration/volunteers), Tom Shields (volunteers), Helen Devlin (registration table) along with Harrison and Tommie Jahn, Margaret Sorrill and Teresa Foster (raffle tickets) and volunteers from the club and CVCC's Circle K.

As for elements to be improved next week, the leaders pointed to a capacity slate of team players, which will result in substantial additional profits, and 100% participation from all members of the club. (For major sponsors, read below.)

Remember our Tuesday, July 4, meeting and meal will be cancelled.

Recent Programs

May 16 - Jim Correll, Executive Director of the upcoming Third Annual Greater Hickory Classic Golf Tournament at Rock Barn (and son-in-law of Marvin and Elaine Zerden), highlighted the status and economic impact of this year's event. He named a number of ways the 2006 Edition to be held September 25/October 1 will be tweaked to encourage the player field and fan participation - nicer gifts, family fun items and special events such as 24 area high school golf teams' participation, NASCAR and NFL driver/player shootouts, live and delayed TV coverage, etc. The emphasis now is on the recruiting and training of tournament monitors, for which our club is already committed (see Frank Willis or Les Bird for details).

Rick Hammer, Harrison Jahn and Marvin Zerden were recipients of Correll's Rock Barn passes.

May 25 - The evening's program was devoted to honoring the HHS Key Club seniors and this year's recipient's of Kiwanis Foundation scholarships. The Key Club honorees included: Amber Clontz, Alyssa Cratty, Garrett Kersey, Betsey Perkins, Jenny Vang and Pa Gra Yang. The recipients of the $3,000 per year scholarships (recently increased from $2,000) were: Amanda Kiziah, Kristi Moore, Jenny Vang and Pa Gra Yang. Each honoree indicated their college of choice and expressed their appreciation to Kiwanis for the opportunities afforded them.

A Lifetime Faculty Advisor Award was recently conferred on Danny Seaver for his 25-year record as Key Club Faculty Advisor and Helen Devlin was commended for her service as Kiwanis Liaison to the Key Club.

May 30 - Past District Governor Bill Wiggs appeared before the club to promote a relatively new initiative to substantially increase the size of the District Foundation's endowment fund.

Using a recognition and award program known as CDKF 1200 (Carolinas District Kiwanis Foundation), Gov. Wiggs urged all members to join the Founders Circle by contributing $1,200 over a 3-year period to increase the Foundation's funding by at least $1,000,000 (from its current balance of $400,000). Proceeds from the additional funding will permit more meaningful support for major child-related projects.

June 6 - Donna Boone, Abernethy Laurels (Retirement Center's) Director of Marketing, highlighted for the club the many advantages of multiple levels of assisted living afforded by her organization. From 118 independent-living homes in the Village to 174 skilled healthcare beds (including 18 specialized Alzheimer's suites), Abernethy Laurels is truly a continuing care center. In her presentation Boone used a promotional video produced by The Jackson Group (Eric Johnson's employer).
