Golf Tournament
On May 21 the annual golf tournament sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Hickory was held at the Catawba Springs course beginning with a lunch catered by Bennett’s Smokehouse and Saloon.
Many prizes were awarded for longest drives, etc. and by drawings.

Recent Programs
May 22– Dr. Garrett Hinshaw, new president of CVCC, spoke on the role of CVCC in this area and on new developments including the Engineering Center.
May29– Tom Winkler was inducted as a new member. He was sponsored by Dave Kozak. A reverse birthday gift was given to Frank Ryan by Teresa Foster.
June 5– Dr. Geoff DeLeary, a Hickory urologist, talked about the medical mission trips he has participated in. In 2001, he went to Kenya with Samaritan’s Purse World Medical Mission and in 2005 to Nicaragua. He is a member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church.
June 12– Mary Sizemore of the Patrick Beaver Library brought everyone up to date on activities at the library, including some of the technological advances that allow patrons to contact reference librarians 24 hours per day and on-line databases that are available to users. She as pre-school visits (50-60 per month), children’s summer reading program (800 signed up), classes on genealogy and other topics, the career-enhancement center and the upcoming service to home-bound readers.
June 19– Maria Goldstein and Gary Stiltman of GoGreenHickory talked of the aims and efforts of their recently-formed organization to conserve energy and promote “greenness”. More can be found at www.kilowattours.org.
At the June 5 meeting Bill Wiggs was in attendance to present a $4,200 check to Donna Mull for support of the scholarships for children to attend the summer 4-H camp. This resulted from the efforts of Dr. Tom Warren in preparing a grant request to the Kiwanis Foundation.
At the June 19 meeting the new officers of the Hickory High School Key Club presented an account of some of their activities. Helen Devlin reported that duct tape from Hickory had been presented to California Kiwanians and will be on their float in the Rose Bowl parade.
