Recent Programs

  • June 2– Dr. Russ Benton, Emeritus Professor of History  at Lenoir Rhyne University, world traveler and frequent speaker at Kiwanis meetings, presented a program on his travel from China to Siberia before boarding the Trans-Siberian Express. His photos showed many sights of Mongolia including those of Ulan Bator, the capital, and of the living conditions of ordinary people of the country.

  • June 9– Patty Black of AAA Travel Agency spoke on the history (founded in 1922) and services of AAA.  The motor club, travel service and insurance are the three primary areas in which AAA operates. She also gave some ideas and details of places to go in the Carolinas.

  • June 16– Amanda Kain of  Catawba County Solid Waste Management  gave a lot of facts about what is being done and what is planned for the future in solid waste management in our county.  Besides curbside pickups there are five convenience centers in the county.  The Blackburn landfill consists of 800 acres. No county money is required to operate the recycling centers because the costs are covered by the income received for the recyclable material. Municipal solid waste goes into a lined area of the landfill while construction and demolition material is put into an unlined area. The facility charges $33 per ton for municipal waste and $21 per ton for demolition and construction waste. Approximately 540 tons of MSW per day and 140 tons per day of C&D is delivered to the landfill giving a substantial income with which to operate the facility. Co-generation using the methane gas generated by the decomposing waste can provide enough electricity to power 1400 homes.  Future projects will attempt to utilize more of the waste in manufacturing other products. Cardboard from industry is the largest single component of material received. Household hazardous waste is collected in Newton in May and in Hickory in November and each collection yields about 800,000 pounds.

  • June 23– Melinda Herzog , Director of the Catawba County Historical Association talked about the facilities and activities of the association.  In addition to the museum located in the old courthouse in Newton and containing many artifacts from early county times, the Historical Association  operates the Harper House in Hickory, the Murray’s Mill Historical District, the Bunker Hill Covered Bridge (a National Engineering Landmark Site) and several cemeteries and other properties.  The Association was formed in 1936, was temporarily disbanded during World War 2 and restarted in 1949 making this the 60th year of continuous operation.

Miscellaneous

Because of the lower than normal receipts from the golf tournament last month other methods of fund-raising have been discussed by the Board of Directors and the membership.  One that has been approved is to join with the Lincolnton Club in having a large amount of Vidalia onions delivered directly from Georgia in ten-pound bags for resale by the clubs.

On June 4, Bill Wiggs was one of the guests.

On June 20, the Hickory High School Key Club conducted the Movie Night at the Carolina Theater

with a major part of the proceeds from the $5 tickets (which included the movie, popcorn, and a drink) going to the Key Club for projects.

Greater Hickory Classic

Frank Willis and Tom Devlin, co-chairmen of the Hole 7 marshals, will need to know soon how many volunteers are going to be available on each of the days (Wednesday through Sunday) so if you have not sent in your volunteer form please let them know that you will be one of the marshals and what days you can work.

Who is this Kiwanian?

Last month’s picture seemed to be difficult to identify by many. It was from a Lenoir-Rhyne yearbook and was of Paul Speagle. Better luck with the picture above of a high school senior.
