News From Former Members Marvin Petersen reports that he has been busy in a Kiwanis club in Florida. It didn’t take him long to be made Vice-President Elect. He also has been volunteering in the computer club resources lab. Carolyn is busy playing bridge among other activities. Rev. Stanley Stiver was the subject of a feature article in the Hickory Daily Record recently on the 60th anniversary of his ordination as a Lutheran minister. In addition to his many pastoral and community accomplishments, the article mentioned his extensive collection of crosses that he has collected from around the world. He has also been recently honored by being named Pastor Emeritus by St. Marks Lutheran Church in Claremont where he was the pastor for 31 years. |

Recent Programs June 26– Neill McGeachy, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Lenoir-Rhyne College, spoke on the state of the athletic programs at Lenoir-Rhyne. New sports are being added, including men’s tennis, women’s tennis, men’s track and field, women’s track and field, and women’s swimming. On Feb. 9 of next year, the L-R basketball team will play an exhibition game against UNC at Chapel Hill. This will be the first contest between the two teams since 1957 when L-R beat UNC at Hickory. They will also be playing the University of Texas in Austin in an exhibition game. July 3– No meeting July 10– Mike Bennett , assistant to the Hickory City Manager and acting Transit manager discussed the Piedmont Wagon bus service in Hickory and Catawba County. After a decline in ridership to about 9800 riders/month last year, a change in routes and schedules has brought ridership back up to approximately 12000 riders per month. The system has four new buses for the regular routes and additional vans for customers living off the main routes. These can be scheduled for pickups one day in advance. Much of the funding for the system is from state and federal sources. |

DISTRICT CONVENTION The district convention will be held at the Spartanburg Mariott in Spartanburg, SC on Friday through Sunday, August 17-19. There will be sessions on many topics including administration of clubs, growth, and communications. The Kiwanis Club of Hickory has submitted four amendments for consideration by the convention. These amendments , if adopted, will bring the wording of bylaws into agreement with International Bylaws, reduce the number of delegates-at-large to conventions, and designate the Carolina Kiwanian as the District Bulletin.
Additional proposed amendments will also be acted upon. |

Miscellaneous At the June 26 meeting, Rod Herbert was re-inducted into the club. Frank Willis was his sponsor. Welcome back! At a recent meeting, Nikki Lynn, the energetic incoming president of the Hickory High School Key Club, was introduced. She spoke of the future and ongoing activities of the Key Club and also of the convention that she and other members would be attending this month in Orlando, Florida. On July 10, a vote was taken and a 3-year pledge of $2500 was approved by the members to assist the Parenting Network in rehab work on their new house.
The noon Kiwanis club is expected to make a similar pledge. |
