Recent Programs July 17– Melinda Herzog of the Catawba County Historical Association spoke on the dedication on June 3, 2007 of the Hickory History Center located in the newly restored Bonniwell-Lyerly and Shuler-Harper Houses. The Bonniwell-Lyerly House (300 tons) was moved in 2004 to the Harper House lot from its original location near Frye Regional Medical Center. July 24– Tami Hefner of the Catawba County Social Services Network described some of the work that her organization does, including adult care, adult protective services, guardianship and payeeship, homemaker and in-home services, nutrition program, services to the blind, transportation for medical appointments and other similar programs. With three Adult Day Care Centers and 15 Adult Care Homes to supervise in addition to the other programs a staff of 61 people is needed. July 31– The meeting was held at Bennett’s Steakhouse, because our usual facility was being used for Vacation Bible School. No speaker. August 7– Andy Terrell, former Hickory High School Key Club officer and Kiwanis scholarship recipient, spoke about his past year as a student at the American International University in Richmond ( a suburb of London), England. He has been an enthusiastic participant in many of the university’s activities including the Drama Club, student government and service organizations. August 14– In place of the regular meeting, the club was treated to a Hickory Crawdads vs. Columbus Catfish baseball game. Barbeque and hot dogs were served in the city suites at the stadium and the game was enjoyed by the members (except for the fact that the Crawdads lost). August 21– Dr. Tom Warren, showed a video and spoke on Preventing and Reversing Heart Disease. He is a member of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine and gave personal testimony on the benefits of following the vegetarian diet recommended by this group. In addition to feeling better and having more energy, he said that he had lost weight and reduced his waist size despite eating more food at more meals. He also spoke on some of the fallacies that are commonly accepted by most people, such as thinking of milk as an all-purpose healthy food when, in reality, it is a high-fat (unless skim) food with other detrimental properties. Members were invited to try a three-week test to see whether a vegetarian diet suits them. Sample menus and references to books, web sites , and other information were passed out at the meeting. |
