Recent Programs

July 29- The meeting was held at the Harper House. After a box dinner from Panera, a tour was conducted by the Hickory Historical Society with an explanation of some of the history and interesting features of the house.

August 5- Members attended a game between the Hickory Crawdads and the Rome Braves. Hot dogs, hamburgers, etc. were served in the city suites. Unfortunately for Crawdad fans the visiting team won by a considerable margin.

August 12– Nikki Lynn, outgoing co-president of the Hickory High School Key Club, and Chelsea Stemple, Caila Huffman, and Mikhale Sherrill gave a presentation on their trip to the Key Club convention in Denver, Colorado at which the club was awarded the Distinguished Diamond Award for the 7th time.

August 19– Jackie Brown of the Department of Social Services told of her work with foster children. Currently there are about 87 children in the program. In addition to keeping track of this many , she is involved in teaching them independent living skills. Foster kids are eligible to attend any state school or community college for free if they age out of foster care or are adopted after they are 12 years old.
This program is in need of volunteers as mentors and to assist the children in various ways.

August 26– A business meeting was held in place of the usual speaker format.

Nominations for some positions were made, notably Linda Baker for President-elect and Tom and Helen Devlin
for new board memberships.

Announcements

Greater Hickory Classic– The tournament begins on September 9. Uniforms for Hole 7 marshals should be picked up on September 2, 3, or 4 between 4:00 and 8:00PM. For those who wish to participate in the training program, it will be held from 6:00 to 7:00 on Wednesday, September 3.

Co-captains Frank Willis and Tom Devlin advise that the number of marshals is adequate for Friday, Saturday and Sunday but that another one or two would be desirable for Wednesday and Thursday for the Pro-Am event.

It was reported at the August 26 meeting that Marvin Zerden has returned to Hickory from the hospital at Duke and is recuperating at Brian Center East on Tate Boulevard. He is expected to be able to have visitors soon.

From the August Kiwanis Magazine

One of the featured articles in the latest Kiwanis magazine is “22 Ways To Grow”.

This article along with others on the same topic are well worth reading if you have not already done so.

The 22 ways are:

1. Escape from the island

2. Be flexible

3. Leave politics at the door

4. Get religion

5. Go to school

6. Go to camp

7. Make friends with the media

8. Blow your horn

9. Think ahead

10. Warm up your welcome

11. Get busy finding busy people

12. Ease the fees

13. Focus on family

14. Keep the fire burning

15. Practice your elevator speech

16. Discover key leader

17. Bank on boomers

18. Recruit working moms

19. Set a goal

20. Consider changing formats

21. Sharpen your saw

22. Hobby lobby

Some of these titles do not mean what they seem to at first glance and some would perhaps not be appropriate for our club, but there are some ideas here that might be useful in promoting the growth of the Hickory Kiwanis Club.

Some Future Activities

It will soon be time for the Fall cleanup of 3rd Avenue.

It seems early to be talking about Christmas but it was mentioned at the August 26 meeting that we will be participating again in the Salvation Army bell-ringing on the Saturdays before Christmas.

"In religion and politics, people's beliefs and convictions are in almost every case gotten at second hand, and without examination."
