Recent Programs

  • September 1– John DeMauro, Business Administrator and Executive Director of Salvation Army in Hickory spoke about the Boys and Girls Clubs of Hickory. Last year there were 719 children in the clubs and 64,002 snacks were served. This year in the first seven months there were 1017 children involved and 39,295 snacks have been served. Budgets are lower this year than last so there is only 28 cents per hour per child contrasted with 48 cents per hour per child last year. The clubs have an operation in Claremont and a small one in Burke County with 80 to 90 kids per day in Hickory.

A check was presented to Mr. DeMauro for the Boys and Girls Clubs programs.

  • September 8– Donna Mull , Catawba County 4-H Club Agent, along with Brittany, Raleigh, Regan, Jarrett and Hannah and some of their parents, presented a program on the summer 4-H camp. There were 39 campers ages 8-14
from here along with about 120 from other counties at the week-long camp. Approximately one-half of the campers were on scholarships. Kiwanis has provided scholarship awards for the past ten years.

  • September 15– Dr. Wally Sauer, principal of the new Snow Creek Elementary School described some of the unique features of the school. The building was designed to be a “green” building. The roof is white and the school has huge windows. Rooms have dual-brightness light switches; motion detectors turn lights off if there is noone in a room. The HVAC scrubber removes 99% of the contaminants in the air; dual-flush toilets and waterless! urinals are standard. No Styrofoam is present in the school and drought-resistant plants have been used for landscaping. It is the first school in North Carolina to obtain a silver level for greenness and is close to gold. The extra 5% cost will be paid from the savings in 4-5 years. The total construction cost was $12,000,000 which was $700,00 under the approved bonds. Capacity is 700 students but there are only 552 this year.

  • September 22– The annual Kiwanis Clubs picnic was held in Kiwanis Park with approximately 75 people (which is more than normal in recent years) in attendance with several from each of the Kiwanis Clubs, the Hickory High School Key Club and the CVCC and Lenoir-Rhyne University Circle K Clubs.

Many of the usual suspects ,including Bill Barkley cooking on the grill, provided the labor and expertise for an excellent picnic.
