September 29– Greg Paradine, Director of men’s and women’s
lacrosse programs at Lenoir-Rhyne University spoke about the prospects
of the teams when play begins next year. A former All-American on UNC’s
#1 ranked team, he was an assistant coach at UNC before taking the L-R
University position.

October 6– Dr. Russ Benton, Professor Emeritus of History at
Lenoir-Rhyne University and always a favorite speaker at Kiwanis
meetings, told of some of the sights and history of Greenland. Located
in the Gulf Stream this huge island has a population of 60,000 Danes and
Scandinavians.

October 13- The annual Installation Banquet was held at the Lake Hickory
Country Club. Bill Wiggs presided over the installation of new
officers which included Linda Baker as President and Lanny
Huffman as President-Elect. Rick Hammer and Bruce
Blackburn remain as Treasurer and Secretary. New members of the
Board are listed on the page 3 masthead.

20– Matt Barkley recounted the 13 years of the Barkley Baseball
School. The summer program is for players from 6 to 12 years old and is
Christian based. He also brought a Louisville Slugger baseball bat
custom made for Bill Barkley.

27– Terry Byers, Director of Education for the Hickory Fire
Department presented a program on fire prevention in the home. An
Appalachian State graduate in Elementary Education, she showed a short
video on the start and rapid growth of a typical house fire. Some of the
most common causes are from cooking, smoking and electrical. This is
Fire Prevention Month and the recommended semi-annual change of smoke
detector batteries is due this coming weekend when the switch to
standard time is made.
Miscellaneous
Ken Kleva won the
Ace of Spades draw on September 27.
The pecans and peanuts for the annual sale will be arriving in the
next few days.
The Adopt-A-Highway
clean-up will take place on November 14. Participants will meet at
9:00 AM in front of the Art Center on 3rd Avenue.
Unicef boxes are available from the HHS Key Club to receive change
for the annual drive.
Danny Seaver reported that 1439 cans of food were collected this
year for the Castle of Cans. This was down from last year’s total
but still very impressive.
On October 20, Wendell
Cramer won a reverse birthday gift from Jay Crane.
Last month’s high school
senior picture was of Helen Devlin.
There is no picture this
month since the editor has been away and left too many things to the
last minute.
