Recent Programs August 28– Mandy Pitts, Hickory Information Officer, spoke about the designation of Hickory as an All-American city. In the competition each city was allowed only ten minutes for their presentation. The video of Hickory’s ten minutes of fame demonstrated how perfectly choreographed and rehearsed the city’s performance was. Included in the video were Helen Devlin and Hickory High School Key Club president Nikki Lynn who made the trip to California on behalf of the city. September 4– After Mark Sinclair, Director of the Catawba Science Center was presented with a check, Bruce Beerbower, Director of Visitor Services and Naturalist at the Center talked about the Critical Thinking Institute which has been operating summers since 1991. Students are accepted into the CTI1 program after they finish 6th grade. Some return for CTI2 the following summer and spend time at companies working on finding solutions to real problems. One of the CTI2 participants this year was Nick Barkley who assisted in the presentation. September 11– Nikki Lynn, president of the Hickory High School Key club reported on Key Club activities and plans for the year. The Children’s Miracle Network movie night raised $500 and upcoming events include assisting with the book sale for the benefit of the Hickory Public Library, participation in a food drive, collecting for the UNICEF Buddy program to fight AIDS in Africa, aiding the Longview Thrift Shop, Brett’s Ride and Key Club week in November to raise money for African schools. (This is just the list for the Fall season). In the winter and spring there will be a Buddy program, a Christmas party for needy kids, luminaries for cemeteries, March of Dimes, Easter egg hunt, junior diabetes drive and a fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Home.
