Vollinger and Simmons take Club Reins.

Helen Devlin named “Kiwanian of the Year”

With a  traditional installation service held on October 2 at Lake Hickory Country Club, Mark Vollinger assumed the presidency of the Hickory Kiwanis Club for the new 2007-08 Administrative Year.

Mark, along with President-Elect Ron Simmons, Secretary Bruce Blackburn, Treasurer Rick Hammer and Directors (as listed on the masthead–page 3) were duly charged and installed by Past Lt. Governor Wendell Cramer.

President Mark has been an active Kiwanis member since 2001.  He is employed by Cramer Lumber Co., now in a sales capacity with other continuing operational responsibilities.  He and his wife Kim have two boys, one 11 and one, a college student.

President-Elect Ron rejoined the club in 2002, having most recently served as chairman-Interclub Visitations.  He is a financial advisor and office manager/owner of a local Edward D. Jones office.  He and his wife Anne have a son, a daughter and one special grandson.

Outgoing President David Kozak outlined his journey as chief executive, how he had grown increasingly comfortable in his role and expressed his appreciation for outstanding performance by the members.  Singling our his top performers for special awards, he named Past Pres. Helen Devlin “Kiwanian of the Year” for her “over-and-above” contributions.  For Distinguished Service Awards he also included:  Golf Tournament Co-Chairs Tom Devlin and Frank Willis, Circle K Advisors Linda Baker and Dr. Harrison Jahn, Key Club Advisor  Danny Seaver and Mark Vollinger for his great support and excellent programs.

Nikki Kozak, Dave’s wife was recognized as a special guest,  and she shared in the accolades expressed for Dave and his successful year.

The Incoming President’s remarks included his desire to expand his and the club’s opportunities to motivate young people.  Mark recalled his meaningful experiences as a member of the GE-sponsored Junior Achievement program and the award presented to him 26 years ago.  As a token of his appreciation, he returned the re-labeled award to his mentor–none other than our own Al Lee, then a senior engineer at the local plant who had volunteered to help teenagers.

Other special guests included Judy Cramer with her 97-year old mother Mrs. Helen Meinin, Mark’s younger brother Steven, Frank Willis’ Wachovia colleague Douglas Dreyer (who was tonight approved for membership), Pres. Niki Lynn and other officers of the HHS Key Club and, of course, spouses and guests of Kiwanians.

Four Men in Black Ties provided a musical program prior to the sumptuous meal.  We are indebted to the members and spouses who took advantage of the excellent dancing opportunities as well as those who made arrangements for the event.  –WHP

Jim Tillman Survives Heart Attack

Last Thursday as Jim and his son were returning from a medical appointment, Jim experienced some classic symptoms that caused him to direct Will to take him to ER.  Very fortunately, the timing was perfect, and after some tests  and the insertion of a single stint, Jim was sitting up and receiving visitors the next morning.  He returned home Monday.  We are so thankful for Jim’s miraculous recovery, and we hope to see you back soon.

Joan Bird, wife of Clarion Editor Leslie Bird, passes

Over the  past weekend we were especially  saddened to learn of Joan’s passing, after a relatively short critical illness.  Our hearts go out to you, Les, your out-of-state daughters Debbie and Arlyne (both recent guests of their Dad) and other family members and close friends.

A memorial service will be held for Joan at Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ, Conover, on Saturday, October 27 at 4:00 pm.

Let us all remember to keep  Les and his family in our prayers.

Recent Programs

October 16Kathy Salloman, Director of Long View Elementary’s successful Hosts program, a  mentoring endeavor with remarkable results.  The program was arranged and introduced by Eric Johnson, who himself is an enthusiastic mentor in the program.

October 23–President Mark unveiled  his strategy for strengthening the club during his administrative year–a concerted effort to increase the club’s membership, thus addressing the need to involve greater numbers in administering to the needs of children.  His first session was a brain-storming event with some positive ideas for increasing our current membership of 53 to possibly doubling it, if every member would be responsible for just one new member.  Let us all support this critical goal.

Announcements

  • Not surprisingly, Charles Dixon was listed by his peers for inclusion in the current edition of Best Lawyers in America.  Congratulations, Charlie!

  • Al Lee has 150 watt-hour meters left over from his leading the Junior Achievement lamp-making project.  He wants help to re-activate the production line as a fund raiser.

  • Former member Rev. Stanley Stiver was recognized for his having donated his fabulous collection of religious crosses to St/ Mark’s Lutheran Church, where he served as pastor for 31 years.  We continue to miss you and your wife Mary Jane.

  • Talking about a full plate, member Margaret Sorrell continues her career as math instructor at CVCC as well as choral duties at St. Aloysius, but this year she has added two biggies–president of the Hickory Choral Society and planning for her holiday wedding to our Mark Walters.  By comparison, it will be hard for any of us to claim we’re too busy to take on additional service work.
