The Hickory High School  Key Club recently received some publicity in the Hickory Daily Record for raising more than $550 for the Children’s Miracle Network.

Recent Programs 

October 30 Tom Adkins, Chief of Police for the City of Hickory, spoke on the functions of the Police Department and his philosophy of operation. 

The city is divided into 5 zones or PACTs (Police and Community Together) with adjustments made as populations change or as needs require. In general, police officers are assigned to one area instead of working anywhere in the city.

He also talked about the 3 C’s,

Constitutionality

Consistency  and

Compassionateness ,

as guiding principles for the police.

November 6 Ruby Locke, of SeaWorld Divers gave a presentation on scuba diving in the Galapagos Islands.

November 13 Marie Connelly, Director of after-school programs for Centro Latino talked about some of the successes and also the needs of the programs at Centro Latino. Marie is an L-R graduate who is originally from Morganton.  She was accompanied by Mercedes Torres, a 16-year old former volunteer who is now a staff member.

November 20 Bishop Martin Wilson, a motivational speaker, talked about his field and tied in many points with Kiwanis objectives.

November 27 Representative Patrick McHenry, congressman for our district, presented his views on the major topics that need to be discussed by the country.

His nomination for the 3 most important issues are for :

  • Size of government and taxation

  • Education

  • Health Care

 The congressman also answered many questions posed at the end of his talk.
 

 

Announcements

  • I wish to express my appreciation to Bill Parks for putting out last month’s Clarion during my absence and also to all who sent cards and condolences.  Les Bird
     

  • Bill Wiggs was a guest at the November 27 meeting.
     

  • To all members who have signed up to “ring the bell” for the Salvation Army for the next  four Saturdays, please remember to be on time to relieve your predecessors.
     

  • The CVCC Circle K club has reported that they received more than $200 for the UNICEF drive.
     

  •  Nikki Lynn reported to the club on November 13 on some of the many activities that the Hickory High School Key Club has been involved in lately, including e-mailing soldiers, street cleanup (with Kiwanis), luminaries, and the Christmas party at Longview.

  • December 4 Major Kent Davis, of the Salvation Army will be visiting us during this holiday season.
