Merry
Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and a Very Prosperous New Year
The annual Christmas party was held December 12 with
many spouses, children and grand-children present. Kathleen
Parks provided seasonal piano music to accompany the meal
and for carol-singing (led by Wendell Cramer and
Mark Walters). Helen Devlin and
Mark Vollinger each read a story to the children
before Santa Claus put in an appearance and distributed candy and
gifts.

Recent Programs
December 5-
Mark Sinclair, Executive Director of the Catawba Science
Center introduced Bruce Beerbower, Naturalist and Director
of Visitor Services at the Center, who described the operation of the
CTI (Critical Thinking Institute). CTI has been in operation since 1990
and has been supported by the Kiwanis Club of Hickory.
It is now operated in two parts, the first during the summer for students
who have just completed 6th grade and the second during the summer for
some of the previous year’s participants.
During the second summer session the students work on real problems at
local industries. This past year Klingspor Abrasives,
Carolina Container and Plastic Packaging participated.
Bruce introduced Nicholas Temple of Granite Falls Middle
School who described his experiences at Klingspor. Bruce also acknowledged
Nicholas Barkley, Kiwanian son who was a participant
this past summer.
December 19– Paige Yount, Director
of Family Services for the Catawba County Palliative Care and Hospice,
told of the services provided to a growing number of clients and of the
plans to expand to 25 beds at the Robinson Road facility. She also spoke
of the need to plan for end-of-life care and the advantages of having
the legal documents to ensure that care.
Kiwanians rang the bell for
the
Salvation Army on Dec.2,9,16,and
23 at both Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club.
