Recent Programs

December 4Major Kent Davis who is in charge of the Salvation Army in the Hickory Area spoke on the history and activities of the Salvation Army. The Salvation Army was started in England in 1878 by William Booth, a Methodist minister who had started preaching to the poor of London years earlier and had formed a predecessor to the Army in 1865.

In Hickory, more than 18000 nights of lodging have been provided so far this year, more than 4600 meals have been served, and 65000 children have attended Boys and Girls Club activities.  The Salvation Army can accommodate 72 people in its shelter. About 1900 families will come to the Toy Store this season. These activities are funded by a $4,000,000 budget to which the familiar kettles contribute approximately $79,000.  83% of all income is used for services.

Also reported at this meeting were the activities of the Hickory High School Key Club and the CVCC Circle K Club (see page 1). The Lenoir-Rhine Circle K has worked on the shoe box project, collecting canned food, an angel tree, caroling, and continued work at the Catawba Science Center.

Under the leadership of Helen Devlin, 360 dictionaries were purchased, stamped and  will be delivered to students in Hickory schools. A collection is being taken for the 2nd grade project at Longview School.

December 11Dale Hamilton, President of the CVCC Circle K club, along with Oscar Sorcia, brought us up to date on their activities and plans, including assisting with the Catawba Science Center Flutterby Exhibit, participating in Leadership Training, running for Congo women on October 6, cleaning up the CVCC campus, volunteering with the Red Cross, doing the Angel Tree project with 150 angels from the Salvation Army and monthly service projects.

Some totals that Dale presented included 525 service hours, 322 K-Family hours, and 385 interclub hours.

December 18– The annual Christmas Party was held with good attendance including Santa Claus. Behavior records were checked throughout the party but none of the naughty children put in an appearance so everyone received gifts.
