Recently the announcement of
officers was published in the Hickory Daily Record along with a picture
of Ron Simmons and Linda Baker. Below is the article minus
the picture which did not do justice to either Ron or Linda.

Recent Programs

December 22– No meeting

December 29– Lanny Huffman presented a program on sky-diving
complete with some videos, information on training for the sport and
other first-hand knowledge.

January
5– Landon Lane gave the annual report of the Hickory Kiwanis
Foundation, Inc. Scholarships have been increased to $3000 each per year
except for one remaining at the old rate of $2000. For the Spring
semester of this year there are 12 students active, but one is on an
internship and does not require the money this semester. For 2009-2010
an estimated $33550 will be disbursed and over the past 24 years just
under $700,000 has been given to worthy students.

January 12– Allen Isenhour talked about and showed pictures of an
alligator hunt in South Carolina where a near- record- size alligator
was finally and killed after several hours of battling the hunters.

19- Eric Johnston spoke about the May 17 golf tournament at the
Catawba Springs course and the things that have to be done to make it a
success. After a discussion of the trends in participation and income
over the past few years, it was apparent that a major effort to recruit
more teams and hole sponsors is needed.

26– Tom Foss, Director of cybercrime protection programs and
related matters at CVCC informed the club of many of the common problems
and some of the solutions to computer-related crime.
The aims of information assurance are to keep confidential information
confidential, to make sure the information is correct and to keep the
information available to qualified users.
Some of the results of this type of crime can be loss of data, loss of
reputation, loss of life, loss of confidence, and loss of market share
for companies.
CVCC is actively involved in assisting organizations in recognizing and
preventing such crime and is being established as a leader in the field.
Miscellaneous
The BUG program at
Oakwood Elementary School will have an awards program on February 3.
The lacrosse tournament, scheduled for a Saturday in the middle of
March, needs some sponsors. Individual sponsorships are $50 and
corporate are $300. So far two teams, out of an expected 15, have
registered. Approximately 300 middle school children are expected to
attend.
Major Kent
Davis of the Salvation Army thanked the club for the $500
donation made to the Salvation Army.
Donna Mull thanked the club through a letter to Dr. Tom
Warren for the camp scholarships for last summer’s 4-H camp and
expressed the hope for a continuation for this coming summer.
About $8600 in peanut/pecan sales have been reported.
The District Convention will be held on February 5-7.

Another Christmas season success was reported by bell-ringers at Walmart and
Sam’s Club (four Saturdays each), with approximately $4600 raised.
All who participated are invited to the banquet to be held January 28.
