  • January 5– Landon Lane gave the annual report of the Hickory Kiwanis Foundation, Inc. Scholarships have been increased to $3000 each per year except for one remaining at the old rate of $2000. For the Spring semester of this year there are 12 students active, but one is on an internship and does not require the money this semester. For 2009-2010 an estimated $33550 will be disbursed and over the past 24 years just under $700,000 has been given to worthy students.

  • January 12– Allen Isenhour talked about and showed pictures of an alligator hunt in South Carolina where a near- record- size alligator was finally and killed after several hours of battling the hunters.

  • January 19- Eric Johnston spoke about the May 17 golf tournament at the Catawba Springs course and the things that have to be done to make it a success. After a discussion of the trends in participation and income over the past few years, it was apparent that a major effort to recruit more teams and hole sponsors is needed.

  • January 26– Tom Foss, Director of cybercrime protection programs and related matters at CVCC informed the club of many of the common problems and some of the solutions to computer-related crime.

The aims of information assurance are to keep confidential information confidential, to make sure the information is correct and to keep the information available to qualified users.

Some of the results of this type of crime can be loss of data, loss of reputation, loss of life, loss of confidence, and loss of market share for companies.

CVCC is actively involved in assisting organizations in recognizing and preventing such crime and is being established as a leader in the field.
